Hi guys, usually I don’t talk about others stuff than making money on my blog, but I really wanted to share this.

I’m working with 2 monitors on my computer. If you don’t work on two screens yet, you should. Even if it’s using an old monitor as a second screen, it boosts your productivity. More than 2 monitors is for ego, but really 2 screens is a plus.

If you didn’t realize it yet, everytime you switch from what you’re working on to some other application, you’re losing your focus for some minutes when you switch back to your work, and along the day, sum up all the minutes, it’s a huge loss of time.

With 2 monitors, you can have your main screen with your work, and the other screen can gather all the secondary applications (e.g. email, chat,web browser, skype, p2p apps…). So when you switch from your work to something else, you lose less focus. And sometimes it’s good to be able to watch two things at the same time. Like reading a tutorial on a website on one screen, and doing the actions on the other screen.

An extra note, I’m following the GTD method to boost my productivity, have a look at it, it’s really great. Also when I’m really busy, I even don’t let my email client run in the background, I start it only three times a day, answer urgent mails, then close it. That prevents me from losing time on not-so-critical emails conversations.

My computer runs on a dual core processor. And I was considering getting a quad core, as my dual core is not powerful enough for all my apps running. If I list the minimum number of apps I get running simultaneously during the day I have : local web server, local database server, Firefox with 10+ tabs open, internet explorer, database client, FTP client, Mail client, Notepad++, Eclipse, XML editor, Regex Editor, Winamp, emule, muTorrent, pidgin, skype, tor+vidalia, antivirus, and multiple explorer windows.

I had another problem, it was synchronization with my laptop. A farmer can’t spend a day without taking care of his animals. When you have multiple websites, it’s the same, except that your websites are your animals. So I always need to be able to go anywhere with my work even if I leave for a week.

Then I eventually stumbled upon a fantastic tool to share computer, called Synergy.

With it you can share your computer keyboard and mouse with another computer. It’s really straightforward. You’re on your master computer, where you type and navigate with the mouse, then you just go to the edge of your screen and the mouse go to the other computer screen. At this point you can do any action on the other computer without switching mouse or keyboard.

And this is when I realized I didn’t even need some newer computer. Now I work on my laptop, so I can go mobile anytime I want without the hassle of synchronizing. And on my desktop I have all secondary apps either in portable version or installed on my desktop.

The portable apps are mail client, for instance, everything I really need to be able to share, they’re running from an external drive than I can take with me and plug anywhere I want.

The apps on the desktop are more p2p, mp3, etc. These are the ones I can let at home for a couple of days and not miss them.

So if you have a slow computer and you want to boost your productivity, instead of buying a brand new machine, get one extra old computer with screen (ask to family or friends, I’m sure there is one in someone’s attic). Install synergy, and share the load between the two machines. Not only working on two screens will make you able to do some tasks much faster, but you also won’t need to spend some money on a new machine, while many “old” machines are powerful enough for most of your tasks.

And I recommend that you install Linux on one of the machines. Whether or not you intend to program and do technical stuffs, it’s a great experience to work on the unix system.

Ok, last note, I’m going away for three weeks of holidays… One week enjoying the fine food and wine in the south of France, then one week surfing on the atlantic coast. Last week will be with my family, then I’ll come back to work!

It’s a full description of a money making project I can’t do because of lack of time, so instead of letting it rot away, I prefer to share it with you… In case I have the time to write it before my holidays you’ll get it otherwise I write to you in august!

And you are still stuck with no idea?

You wish you could go back 3 years ago with your current knowledge, and be able to build the killer website that will make money?

But whatever idea you have, it has already been done and you have no chance to compete with websites that were made years ago.

Here’s a tip.

In case you didn’t know, it is possible to create an exe application from HTML. (Sorry I don’t have the software name in mind and I’m not at home now to find it).

So here’s what you do :

- Pick a popular website idea… e.g. a videos website, a games cheats database, a myspace layouts collection.

- Find the most visited websites for the idea you’ve chosen . Get help from Alexa and Compete (I use Firefox’s free extension called SearchStatus, it displays the Pagerank, Alexa and Compete values for every website you visit). Then copycat what seems to be working, and also steal the best ideas about ads placements.

- Make the page that you will transform into an exe file. This page can simply redirect immediately to your website homepage. Or it can be a custom page if you don’t need a redirection to your whole website.

- Create an exe from this page.

- Create a small installer script, that will create an executable to install your program on the user computer. I like NSIS, a free script-based installer maker written by the guys who made winamp. But you can pick anyone you want.

- And finally submit your final installer to shareware repositories. Give it a name which is composed of keywords.

Let’s say you have made a blog where you post some funny videos from youtube. Call your file “Daily funny videos”, with a description such as “A program that brings you daily doses of funny videos”.

And that’s it, because you put it on the shareware websites, when someone is looking for “funny videos”, he will get all the results of the shareware sites (because they rank high in the SERP) pointing to your exe. And the guy who gets your exe will go to your website. You pass over all the other people who’ve made the same kind of site. And another advantage, it’s better than a bookmark, once the guy has the exe installed on his computer, he’s more likely to come back to your site, rather than having a bookmark lost in dozains of others.

So here you go, just start to list all the “old” ideas of money websites, and see which one you want to implement, and take advantage of the easy instant and free traffic that this method brings.

And an extra tip, what I recommend is to be creative, so instead of creating another myspace layouts website, I’d rather write some online software on the website, and make an exe out of it. You can even steal it if you don’t know how to program.

For instance, you search for an online javascript-based Mortgage estimator. You save the page, edit the HTML to keep only the javascript function and parts of the HTML, you write a new layout around. And you put some Mortgage affiliates links to get commissions! Make an exe from it and you’ve got your Mortgage estimator software to distribute…

Think of all high paying sponsors and try to do a google search on “online calculator” + niche name from the sponsor. You’ll find plenty of ideas.

Go to work now!

2) Paraphrase it, and write your own. Usually a 40 pages document full of shit is enough. Do not forget to fill it with affiliate links in case of some fool would actually follow the outdated/crappy advices you put in it

3) Make an annoying website that tells one is gonna make 1 million within next month if one downloads your ebook for a nice price (your price must end with a 7, why ? Because years ago someone did some study somewhere that says that if you end your price with the number 7, you’re gonna sell your shit much more. And, funny thing, everyone still believes it). So let’s say $47.77

Of course don’t forget to put intrusive javascript of a fake sale agent on your website so the poor guy is annoyed until he agrees to buy your crap.

4) And because you’re cheap, don’t buy google adwords. Instead, search for a list of marketing blogs that talks about making money (there is a gazillion of such blogs - mine included). Then spam blindly each owner and say you loved their blog (that you actually didn’t even look at), and you’re looking for a great business partner, and the guy seems to be the one. But he’s got to hurry otherwise you’ll have to find another partner. The deal is simple. He writes a post on his website telling how great your ebook is and that everyone who wants to make money should buy it, and by the way his readers can have a great deal… $37,77 instead of $47.77, but only for the first 500 (even if the poor guy has only 30 readers).
What does he get in exchange? 50% of any sale of your ebook made through his website.

Don’t laugh, all this sounds terribly lame, but it actually works, at the cost of clueless/naive people who are desperate to make money.

I’ll repeat it over and over, because I want people to avoid such trap : There is a ton of money on the internet, plenty of opportunities, you can literally make money out of thin air. but THERE IS NO SHORTCUT. Only CONSISTENCY will bring you the money. You don’t know where to start? Look at my beginners project to make money through newsletter and start TODAY. And don’t give up.

Some reader asked me a few questions by email, and I eventually gave him most of the info that can make you hit big bucks, IF YOU ARE CONSISTENT, so I thought I could share it with you as well.

Why am I sharing this? Because this is a project that would require 1h per day for 3-6 months before it starts making money, so I know that 99,9% of you won’t do it. But for the braves who dare to put the little effort, you’ll get rewarded a lot.

So the plan is the following:

- Buy one .com domain
- get a $5 shared hosting
- install 10 blogs on subdomains from your .com (Use different templates)
- each one is an adult niche, e.g. : polish teen fetish redheads, polish teen fetish blondes, polish teen fetish brunette, etc.
- put some automatic content, mix it with RSS from sponsors. This can be text, galleries, videos.
- your subdomains link to your main .com, and you main .com is a blog regrouping all niches content (remix it a bit if possible): in my example your main blog would be: “polish teen fetish”
- submit your blog to adult directories, install links exchanges, post links to your blogs
- create and submit TGP/MGP, it still a good source of traffic

And your goal is to rank high enough in the SERP to get organic traffic (which converts much better than free traffic)
To achieve that:
- Buy a couple of .com; To host them, you can either use other paid hosting OR free hosting. The only point is to have each of your website on a different IP
- Create a couple of adult-oriented websites but NOT porn or sex (e.g. talking about partner relationships)
- Get links to those website, it’s easier because it’s not porn, do it the whitehat way so you’ve got hundreds of possibilities.
- The goal? Getting a good number of backlinks, good pagerank on your website. You don’t care if the traffic is good or not, you just care for the backlinks.
- Then when your websites get trusted (high PR, 6 months of existence at least), put on them links to your porn websites. Because it is adult content, the LSI google algorithm won’t penalize you (if you’d put link from a “gardens” or “recipes” website to your porn websites, that’d be a different story…)
- And you will just need a couple of high PR websites linking to your porn website to make it rank high enough, if you’re using some creative niches…

REMEMBER: For the niches… Go deep, don’t take “amateur teen” as a niche, but “amateur first-time blonde shaved teen”… Make a list of keywords to get nice ideas, and mix them…

Let’s break down the work

The one-time setup would be:
- make your porn blogs (install wordpress+SEO+templates+automatic content setup with wp-o-matic)
- make your adult websites (create 10-15 pages from articles/scraped contents, then rewrite/improve the content by hand
- setup links exchanges

Then work everyday at least 30 min. A typical day could be:
- content is automatically created to each blog. no work, just check that your blog is alright.
- create and submit TGP/MGP
- get some manual backlinks to your non-porn websites
- get also a few backlinks to your porn websites, but you don’t need too many, only relevant ones

During the process:
- look if you can automatize tasks through macros programs (Selenium!)
- look at your stats, and refine your porn blog (test banners positions, ads types, etc.)
- find other ways to get traffic

Starting from scratch, try to improve the traffic of your porn blog (read in adult biz forums to get tips), it should take 3-6 months to see any result anyway, then after 6 months, if you were consistent and you see that your porn blogs traffic is good enough, put the links on your non-porn websites, and watch your porn blog traffic rises.

And then, ONLY then, expand your empire to 10 or more other blogs.

Once the system is setup and the traffic is coming, that’s passive income, you can either go to sleep and count the money, or grow your empire, or work on other projects (as I do)

There are probably many details missing in this plan, but basically I listed the important info, for the rest you can find the answers to most of your questions by a simple google search, and of course you can always send me a mail if you have specific questions.

You might be asking yourself “why do some people succeed in making money online and not me?”. I’m gonna tell you the answer, mostly it’s all about perseverance, because making money on the internet is really not so hard if you’re wiling to put the effort.
After circling around the internet looking for ways to make money, you’ll gradually learn things, and after trying different projects and failing 20 times, you’ll eventually find the system which works for you.
Most people who are making it are nothing more than ordinary, myself included, and if I can make money so can you.

I got really annoyed yesterday by something I’ve already seen too many times. Someone sending a zip file which contains 500 pics of candid girls pictures (to be used for creating fake profiles in blogs, myspace, etc.). That’s very generous but that’s nothing extraordinary, I wrote a little php script in one hour to scrape pics from blogs, and with it I can download more pics that I will ever use.

Why did I get annoyed? Not because the guy was giving the pics, but because he said something like “that’s a great gift for you, bow on your knees, adore me, and I’ll send you more pics”.
I have seen many places like forums where you find such pics collections, presented as if it was some killer resource.

Yeah right.

You know the story… Give a man a fish, you’ll feed him for the day, teach him to fish, you’ll feed him for life.
So instead of giving you a pics collection, I’m giving you my script, and you can start downloading thousands of pics for all your needs.
(Read the instructions in the script itself, be careful I set it to use Tor as a proxy, you should use a proxy anyway).
If you don’t know how to use it, just download portable xampp, put the files in the htdocs directory, check the php.ini file that the curl extension is uncommented (do a search for “curl” in the php.ini). If you don’t have Tor, search for “vidalia” in google.

Note that on my computer, I put php in Windows PATH and then I can use php as a command line, it’s way faster.

I’m also testing the sponsor, I should be receiving my first payment soon.

What I’m really happy about it is how I manage to create a powerful moneymaker, thanks to the experience of the first adult blogs project.

The problems with the first blog project were:

- not too easy to setup

- generating traffic was a bit tedious

- sales were difficult to get, the sponsor was not so easy to market

- it was more a long-term project, it took months to make sales

The good things were:

- the blog was a “set and forget”, once done, you didn’t have to take care of it

- if you like adult videos/pics, it was fun

- you could expand it and make a big network (=big money)

So I decided to keep the advantages and find new solutions to get rid of the disadvantages. And I’ve managed quite well. Now the adult blog v2 has the following good points:

- damn easy to setup (requires some html knowledge though)

- generating traffic is a breeze thanks to a couple of techniques + some automation tools I’ve written

- sales seems good. As written above I’m at about $13 a day for 1h a day, and I’ve not even yet optimized my work, I’m still testing many things. I already know how to add a 10-15% increase within a few days AND multiply the figure by 2 or 3 after a month or two (yes that means one blog could generate up to $50 a day, and you can setup as many blogs as you want).

- it’s short term for sure (The first day I did my blog, the second day I started to market it and made the first money within 24h). I don’t know if it would work long-term but I’m pretty sure this can last one year at least.

- the blog is a “set and forget”, once done, you don’t have to take care of it

- if you like adult videos/pics, it is fun

- you can expand it and make a big network (=big money)

So, as promised, everyone who wrote me to be part of the adult blog project v1 will be able to take part of the v2. I’ll have to finish my testing. Basically I’m waiting to receive my money from the sponsor to certify that the method work, and after it will be a question of fine-tuning.

I’ll contact the people who wrote me, and be aware that I’ll put some kind of “activity control” for this project, because I want everyone to really do the work and to make the money. I think this will be unique and very interesting, because when you take part of any project on the internet, no one is looking at you to see if you’re working. On the opposite, usually people are selling subscriptions, and their goal is to have consumers who are paying but lazy and never make money so they need to stay subscribed. I’ll do the opposite, there will be some dashboard where people will see what task they’ll have to do on a weekly basis, and they’ll be controlled. By doing that, they’ll make the money and I’m sure it will be a good motivation to start. And the people who are lazy and don’t care of earning money will be out of the project,so other people can have their slot.

And since this project is private (it’s necessary that not too many people are doing it in order to keep its effectiveness), I will also write a post about a different project, a whitehat/greyhat one, nothing to do with adult, I don’t have the time to implement it, so I want to give it to you so maybe some of you test it, hopefully make some money, and share their results…

But before a few updates.
I’m still getting emails for the adult blog project, and the waiting list goes very long, but the good news is, I’m currently experimenting an evolution of the adult blog project, mixed with the be a whore post, added to some of the latest moneymaking tips I got. If it goes well, I’ll create an adult blog project v2, still free and still private. And Everybody on the waiting list will get access to this new project.

Besides I’m having 2 other projects to share with you but no time to prepare them yet!!! So probably you’ll discover them around may or june, so if you didn’t do it yet, subscribe to my RSS feed to be sure not to miss those.

Now, why do I say that you have to write an e-book? I’ll tell you my little story.
I began in the business of internet marketing in 2004 when I decided to write an ebook.
You know the trick: You choose a subject that you know. You write an ebook. You sell it, and you become rich.
Of course it doesn’t work so easily, but it was a good project, I learned many things, and it really got me started in this business.
It took me around 6 month working part-time, because I knew nothing at the time… SEO? Affiliate? What? I had to learn everything along the way.
I picked up a subject, wrote a 50 pages ebook about it.
I did some keyword research with wordtracker, and registered a domain with those keywords, then set-up and SEO’ed a website.
I did some backlinks building, nothing fancy, mostly by hand.

I waited then for the money to flow, but nothing, I was really disappointed (first lesson, don’t expect to become rich so easily!) so I didn’t take care anymore about the website. But after 6 months, I got my first sale! Still it wasn’t enough to make me spend more time marketing it. (first mistake, you always have to be patient, and put the effort to make money). Anyway after one year, when I checked the sales, I realized that I had made $600! Totally passive income. Imagine if I had worked a bit more to get more traffic.
I had to close it for some personal reasons, but I decided to re-open it in 2006.
Meanwhile, some domain squatters had already bought my domain to put some domain parking on it
So I used the same name and added “tips” : “xxxxx.com” became “xxxxxtips.com” so I could have the same keywords in the domain name
And I added a blog.
This one is really what everyone should do when they sell an ebook.
You look at any ebook landing page, you see it is always this big white page with a long speech and testimonials. They all look the same.
But by adding a blog, I think it gives some trust to the people, because

1) you give some info to people, if it is good enough, they see you’re not going to sell them a crappy ebook.

2) By seeing some activity, they know that your site is still maintained, it doesn’t looks like old stuff (even if you wrote your ebook 4 years ago like me).

What’s my routine? I write a short article on the blog, every two month. If my article is too big, I cut it in several pieces.
I wait a bit to get my new post indexed by Google.
Finally, I go to those articles directories, and submit my article to get some traffic/backlinks.

I have maybe a dozain of articles since 2006, and spend an evening once every two months for writing the new article, but I could write more articles if I wanted to market more my ebook.

Results? I get a steady 150 visits per day and make a couple of hundreds per month.
Having a blog really increase my organic traffic and my sales.

So I advise you to write an ebook, it’s not a big instant moneymaker, but with consistance and patience, you can get a nice passive income.
And you’ll learn many things along the way.
There is the majority of people who try to make money on the internet and fail/don’t make a lot. I believe that one thing that the successfull minority has, is patience and consistence. Yes, you can try to make big and quick money, but ALWAYS work on some long-term side project, even if you earn nothing now.

It’s like the stocks market. You can make a lot of money quickly but it is not easy. Or you can make good money on the long-term if you take some safe stocks that you know for sure they work with time. But of course, it is more boring, and you need more patience.

Some long-term project is basically everything that involves creating your website around a subject you know: Sell an ebook, but could also be to set-up a community through a forum, or create a resources website (like those myspace goodies websites)…
You have plenty of opportunities, just take action now!!!

So here we go for that little project I’ve been playing with.
The good part - It doesn’t require any investment, and you can start making money within a few days, if not today.
The bad part - It’s kinda weird. I’m telling you, even if I had reasonable success with it, I don’t think I will go on doing it. It can be fun on the begin, but it gets old very fast.

And a warning : It is again an adult project, so if you were shocked by my adult blogs project, don’t EVEN read the following.

So what is the idea? Again, like everything about sex on the internet, that’s quite simple : Taking advantages of the poor horny guys who are trying to meet girls on the web.

You might already know that the dating industry is big, and companies are fighting to get their share. Especially since social websites (e.g. myspace) have appeared, where it is easy to meet people (at least virtually).

So for this, you can target either dating sites or social websites.

The idea here is to pretend to be a sexy girl, and trick pervs into subscribing to affiliate adult websites. There are a bunch of adult websites that will pay you up to $75 for every people who subscribe to them, through your affiliate link. And there are many desperate guys, who don’t care to pay. Your job is to make both meet.

To find people, I went to a dating website, and created a fake profile, uploaded a few pictures of a hot girl, pretending to be searching for a casual relationship with older guys.
Another way was to make a fake profile on a social website, and start sending friends invitations to get people to see my profile.
What would be better?
- Being on a dating site, you are sure that many guys will contact you, the only problem is that they are looking to date a girl, not registering to another website, so the task is gonna be a bit more difficult.
- Being on a social site, you can buy a bot that automatically send invitations to get friends. But you can be sure that with a bot, many other people will do the same and it will be more difficult to get responses. The other solution is to attack a social website that is less known (avoid myspace, facebook, tagged…). But of course it is going to be some stupid work to add new friends.
On the whole, you must remember that you’ll have to contact a large number of people before getting results. Don’t expect to contact 50 people and earn $1000. You’ll need more than that.
This is why I would advise the dating site, you can be sure to get 100’s of men trying to contact you if you put the right pics (Think student girl - hot but believable, avoid model pics - mix hot pictures with more casual pictures. Hint: I love webshots.com to find plenty of pictures).
You could even create several profiles, why not? But don’t start too big.

I registered to one dating website which I believe is not very popular, but has a good number of profiles - very good, enough users to work on, but no competition. To find it, I just did a google search, and read opinions about it to know if there was some activity. Compete.com is also a good indicator to check a site popularity.

I forgot to tell you, you need to register to one of those adult websites, as an affiliate. Before registering, be careful and read the TOS, because you’re gonna market the adult site through online chat - This is often referred as Instant Messenger Marketing - and many sites don’t allow that.
I used Camkingscash they allow such marketing method, and actually even give you a full training ebook, their ebook is a good read, just don’t go to the websites they list to find customers, because as you can imagine, other people have already done it there, and opportunities are scarse. I switched to Dating Gold. Better find yourself some websites with no competition (easy, just use google).

Once you get your affiliate link, note it, and start to prepare yourself. In the webcams programs, you can select a model to promote. Choose one whose face is not visible, and get on webshots some pictures of a girl who could be the model. You should actually do that BEFORE creating your fake profile on the dating site.

Register on AIM or MSN, that’s what you will use to chat with the guys later. Be sure to get a good IM software, I like to use Gaim, because with it, you can chat with several identities simultaneously.

So far, not so much work, but already time to chill, wait a few hours, before the next step.

Then, look on the dating site if you already got some messages of guys who are interested in you, otherwise start to send messages to random men such as:
“Hi sweetie, my name is xxx! I have seen your profile and maybe we can chat, my AIM address is xxx otherwise I have a MSN address : xxxx”
If you got some people contacting you, reply with the same kind of message. Don’t waste time, don’t try to be nice, just give them your IM address.

Later, fire up your IM, and wait for people to chat with you. When I did that, on the begin I was disappointed, because I had no one contacting me, so during that time, I was contacting random people on the dating site, sending them my IM address. And eventually my contacts added up. So keep on getting new contacts, it is very important.

Then what’s going to happen when you talk to the guy ?
As for my story, I was presenting myself as a wild student, who is trying to pay her bills by doing some cam show.
The key is to go to the point. My mistake at first was to try to be friendly with the guys, but that was not working. Be aware, the guys who are willing to pay for cam shows are people who are there to have sex, even if it is virtual.
It’s gonna be your role : Being a whore. And that’s the disturbing part of the job, you’ll have to talk dirty with guys, pretending to be a girl.
So, when you start to chat, be direct, start by asking their age and sex.
Then you be straightforward. What worked for me was to say things like “oh I’m happy to chat with you, I liked your profile, and I am a bit nervous because I am going to start my shift at work”
the guy of course always asks me what is my job… Be funny and wild! “I am flipping burgers, totally naked, in front of a webcam” Guys always crack up to this… So I add “Ok, I am not flipping burgers, but the rest is true…“.
Your strategy is to get the guy horny… because when all the blood will be down his pants, he won’t think logically and he’ll register to your affiliate link. So, open the dating site during your chat session, so you can look at his profile and give him compliments, and be provocative and dirty. THINK ABOUT PORN MOVIE LINES!!!!
Don’t waste more than 10 minutes on a guy, at the end of the conversation tell him to register, give him your aff link, it’s usually free/ultra cheap ($1). Explain him that this way you and him can finish your stuff, otherwise you’ll have to chat with another guy eventhough you would prefer to finish with him. Remind him that you are a student who needs to pay the bills, and if he doesn’t want to register… just cut the conversation and block him on your IM so you don’t need to chat again with him.
Anyway, every time after a conversation, block the guy, you don’t want to talk with him anymore, you want to talk with new guys who can brings you more cash!

So you get the idea. Get many contacts on your IM, chat with them, be dirty and explicit quickly. Get him horny, drop your aff link, and promise you’ll finish him during the webcam session. After 10 minutes, cut the chat and block him, whether it worked or not.
Chat with several guys at the same time, with multiples IM accounts… Repeat, repeat repeat.
You can do that an hour or two every day and quickly get some easy money.

Some stats on my experiment : one profile got me around 60 messages per day, and turned into 30-35 AIM adds. When connecting 2 or 3h in the evening (US hours), I could chat with 10-25 guys. Was doing my story, sending them hot pictures as well, and made from $40 up to $120, depending on the day.

The last questions :
- Is it profitable? Yes, you don’t invest any money, and potentially, you could make around $50-$100 per hour.
- Is it for you? Depends on yourself, if you feel comfortable with it. People there want SEX, you need to be dirty, that’s the only “skill” required.
- What’s the catch? The difficulty lies in your ability to find places where people are not already over-spammed. Don’t forget, Google can help you for that.
- Why don’t you like doing it? Because apart of the schizophrenic aspect of having to pretend to be a girl and have online sex discussions with unknown perverts, I found that this job was terribly repetitive and not very intellectually challenging. Besides, you can’t really automate it a lot, and if you read my other posts, you already know that automation is a must in my projects.

The final line… If you need a bit of money and are bored during a weekend, get a couple of movies, put yourself in front of the TV with your computer, and do this project as the same time. It’s always better to make a few hundred bucks than lazying around for nothing.

She was starting a business, she was organizing “risk analysis” courses, and she would have like to have a website to get some customers.

I asked her: “What do you want exactly?” She didn’t know… By experience, I know that when you create a website for someone, you have of course to give choices, but you have to take decisions on many things, because if you start to rely too much on the guy’s decisions, he’s gonna drive you mad. He’ll say stupid things like “Oh I want that you put the menu 15 pixels more to the left, people will find my website more user-friendly”. And then you’ll spend hours to find the perfect green gradient that he likes, and getting headache because of changing the HTML a thousand times.

Therefore, I usually ask for what content the person want, ask if he has some idea of the organization of the pages, and if so, that he draws screens on the paper, indicating how he wants things to be displayed. And if the person doesn’t know anything, I just ask for the content, what kind of colour theme he wants, and then I find a couple of templates around that color, show it to the guy for him to decide which one he wants. Then I create the website, show it, ask for remarks, and make the modifications if they are not too big, and nothing more.

But I have to be honest, normally I only create websites for friends or family.
Because this situation happened to me a couple of times: I’m discussing with someone, and when I explain I do internet stuffs, he mentions he would need a website, so he asks how much it would cost if I do it.
I ask what he wants, he says “Oh some website with pages to put information about my business”.
I see that it will take 1 or 2 hours to do the job, so I tell him “Yeah I could make it but for the time it would take, I can’t make you pay more than $50″.
Then hell happens.
The guy eventually wants some website with an online shop, and makes me change 10 times the design because he doesn’t sell anything and he thinks it is because of the design. And when the website gets 1 visit per month, the guy will complain, and if I try to explain that if he wants some serious SEO, it would take me at least a few days, which would cost him at least a thousand $ (and that’s a friendly price), then the guy doesn’t understand why it cost $50 to make a website and $1000 to get some visitors… and eventually things turn bad…

But one friend asked me once last year to make a website for his association. Because he knew about my stories, he asked me to give him some rates that would NOT BE cheap, but similar to other web agencies. He could pay the price, but he preferred to have me because he knew I was going to do something good.
So I set up some rates, there were cheaper than any other companies, but it was enough to cover all the extra time I would be spending on that project to make things go right.

- $300: website one time setup fees, advices, basic SEO and getting listed on Google
- $20 per website page.

- $500 per year maintenance fees (include hosting, domain name, and minor changes on the website, i.e. all changes must be equivalent in total to less than a page every month).
- $20 to create a new page on the website
- $10 to do major changes on a page

These rates seem expensive if you compare to some indian hired on rentacoder.com, but people who come to see me for a website are people who don’t know shit about creating a website, and they wouldn’t be able to work with some freelance guy, because they don’t event know what they want. Saying “I need a website” is one thing, but defining exactly what needs to be done requires someone in front of you who can discuss with you.

If you live in a populated area, chances are that there are many professionals who don’t have a website because they don’t know who can help them, or it is too expensive for them, so you could actually build a profitable business around this. Go to small shops, find a few clients, get started, see how you can adjust your rates, and if you do a good job for a fair price, you’ll get clients by word of mouth.
I don’t do it because I already earn enough with my internet stuffs, but I think that searching “offline” to sell your “online” skills is really a good way to make a lot of money.
The main reason why people will not be interest in paying for a website is, of course, money.
And this is where my little story taught me something interesting.

When I asked what content she wanted to put on the website, the girl showed me a brochure she was always carrying with her, it was 4 pages, plus an additional page with courses and prices.
Frankly I wasn’t interested at all to work for her, even with my “high” fees, so I just popped a random rate out of my mind… “I’ll do it for $1000, plus $500 yearly fees.”
I explained her it was a bargain, because she would have to pay at least $2000 or $3000 if she went to a web agency.
But I could guess she wouldn’t spend that much money, and I was expecting that she was going to forget about it.

Indeed, she said it was too much, she couldn’t afford it… But she asked me, “if I pay $1500, how many customers can you send me?”
Of course, I couldn’t know, and I was not going to lie to her.
So I proposed her a deal… “I’ll do your website for $100, and everytime you get one customer through the website, you pay me $100, until you have paid the full $1500. But because your investment is only those first $100, you will have a website which takes the content of this brochure, nothing fancy, you can’t expect to have it fine-tailored.”
She was selling her courses for $400-$2000, so obviously, it was a good bargain for her, she really had nothing to lose…

I thought to myself “Ok I don’t have a clue if she will ever get one customer, but at least I will get $100 to make a 5 pages website, and she gets her website at a killing price, that’s fair enough”.

Still I wanted to see if I could get her some customers… That meant getting some good traffic, without spending time on it. I used my personal backlink network to make her website rank well, and decided to look at adwords… It was damn expensive, something like $2-$5 per click! So I used instead the trick I explained in my previous post: Getting listed on Google Local.
The whole thing took me around one hour to setup (creating the website using a template, buying the domain name, setting my backlink system to send some links to her website, and filling the google local subscription form).

I made one change once, to her request, but otherwise I didn’t touch anything on her website since, I was quite happy because I made some money without headache. She was happy because she got her website at a great price, and she actually liked the template so she didn’t have any problem with the design.

But guess what? The best was to come… Customers actually found her website, and I started to get money from her for every customer… And today I have officially sent her 14th customer! I earned my $1500 after 5 months, and, I repeat, the whole thing took my one hour of work.

It doesn’t seem much, 14 customers is less than one customer per week, the average traffic is around 15 visitors a day, but all of these customers pay several hundreds for a course! So she’s very happy with my work, and I’m very happy to have made that much money without all the fuss I had with previous people.

If I was doing that kind of deal like ONCE every TWO WEEKS, I would make $3000 per month, plus the future $500, which comes automatically every year.

Even if you don’t have the backlink system like mine, just getting the website listed on Google Local will make your client appear on top of the search result page. If possible, be careful to choose businesses that are not yet listed (e.g., avoid restaurants, or any profession which is already full of listings in your area).

But I know, you’re like me, and even the prospect of making that much cash is not enough to make you move.
Too bad, but if you are really looking for some money, take the rates I wrote above, just spend one or two days and go to small shops, preferably during quiet hours, talk to the owner, make a deal like I did, to pay a bit now, and the rest when results appear, try to find a contract or two, and see if it is worth doing it. Just think that if you have a free day, instead of spending it in front of the TV, just do what I say, at the very worst, your time will have been as useless as watching the TV. Chances are that you will find one contract and make maybe a $100 now, and a couple of hundreds over the next months. Not bad, but even better, you might be luckier, make a couple hundreds now, that will result in a couple thousands. So think again how you would like to spend your next free day.
