Send quadcores to hell

Filed under: General, Tools and scripts — Alan @ 9:26 am

recycle old computers and don't buy a new quadcore

Hi guys, usually I don’t talk about others stuff than making money on my blog, but I really wanted to share this.

I’m working with 2 monitors on my computer. If you don’t work on two screens yet, you should. Even if it’s using an old monitor as a second screen, it boosts your productivity. More than 2 monitors is for ego, but really 2 screens is a plus.

If you didn’t realize it yet, everytime you switch from what you’re working on to some other application, you’re losing your focus for some minutes when you switch back to your work, and along the day, sum up all the minutes, it’s a huge loss of time.

With 2 monitors, you can have your main screen with your work, and the other screen can gather all the secondary applications (e.g. email, chat, web browser, skype, p2p apps…). So when you switch from your work to something else, you lose less focus. And sometimes it’s good to be able to watch two things at the same time. Like reading a tutorial on a website on one screen, and doing the actions on the other screen.

An extra note, I’m following the GTD method to boost my productivity, have a look at it, it’s really great. Also when I’m really busy, I even don’t let my email client run in the background, I start it only three times a day, answer urgent mails, then close it. That prevents me from losing time on not-so-critical emails conversations.

My computer runs on a dual core processor. And I was considering getting a quad core, as my dual core is not powerful enough for all my apps running. If I list the minimum number of apps I get running simultaneously during the day I have : local web server, local database server, Firefox with 10+ tabs open, internet explorer, database client, FTP client, Mail client, Notepad++, Eclipse, XML editor, Regex Editor, Winamp, emule, muTorrent, pidgin, skype, tor+vidalia, antivirus, and multiple explorer windows.

I had another problem, it was synchronization with my laptop. A farmer can’t spend a day without taking care of his animals. When you have multiple websites, it’s the same, except that your websites are your animals. So I always need to be able to go anywhere with my work even if I leave for a week.

Then I eventually stumbled upon a fantastic tool to share computer, called Synergy.

With it you can share your computer keyboard and mouse with another computer. It’s really straightforward. You’re on your master computer, where you type and navigate with the mouse, then you just go to the edge of your screen and the mouse go to the other computer screen. At this point you can do any action on the other computer without switching mouse or keyboard.

And this is when I realized I didn’t even need some newer computer. Now I work on my laptop, so I can go mobile anytime I want without the hassle of synchronizing. And on my desktop I have all secondary apps either in portable version or installed on my desktop.

The portable apps are mail client, for instance, everything I really need to be able to share, they’re running from an external drive than I can take with me and plug anywhere I want.

The apps on the desktop are more p2p, mp3, etc. These are the ones I can let at home for a couple of days and not miss them.

So if you have a slow computer and you want to boost your productivity, instead of buying a brand new machine, get one extra old computer with screen (ask to family or friends, I’m sure there is one in someone’s attic). Install synergy, and share the load between the two machines. Not only working on two screens will make you able to do some tasks much faster, but you also won’t need to spend some money on a new machine, while many “old” machines are powerful enough for most of your tasks.

And I recommend that you install Linux on one of the machines. Whether or not you intend to program and do technical stuffs, it’s a great experience to work on the unix system.

Ok, last note, I’m going away for three weeks of holidays… One week enjoying the fine food and wine in the south of France, then one week surfing on the atlantic coast. Last week will be with my family, then I’ll come back to work!

I still have a great post to share with you. It’s a full description of a money making project I can’t do because of lack of time, so instead of letting it rot away, I prefer to share it with you… In case I have the time to write it before my holidays you’ll get it otherwise I write to you in august!

Download thousands of pics of real girls

Filed under: Tools and scripts — Alan @ 6:54 pm

Hey guys, here’s a fun script for you.

You might be asking yourself “why do some people succeed in making money online and not me?”. I’m gonna tell you the answer, mostly it’s all about perseverance, because making money on the internet is really not so hard if you’re wiling to put the effort.
After circling around the internet looking for ways to make money, you’ll gradually learn things, and after trying different projects and failing 20 times, you’ll eventually find the system which works for you.
Most people who are making it are nothing more than ordinary, myself included, and if I can make money so can you.

I got really annoyed yesterday by something I’ve already seen too many times. Someone sending a zip file which contains 500 pics of candid girls pictures (to be used for creating fake profiles in blogs, myspace, etc.). That’s very generous but that’s nothing extraordinary, I wrote a little php script in one hour to scrape pics from blogs, and with it I can download more pics that I will ever use.

Why did I get annoyed? Not because the guy was giving the pics, but because he said something like “that’s a great gift for you, bow on your knees, adore me, and I’ll send you more pics”.
I have seen many places like forums where you find such pics collections, presented as if it was some killer resource.

Yeah right.

You know the story… Give a man a fish, you’ll feed him for the day, teach him to fish, you’ll feed him for life.
So instead of giving you a pics collection, I’m giving you my script, and you can start downloading thousands of pics for all your needs.
(Read the instructions in the script itself, be careful I set it to use Tor as a proxy, you should use a proxy anyway).
If you don’t know how to use it, just download portable xampp, put the files in the htdocs directory, check the php.ini file that the curl extension is uncommented (do a search for “curl” in the php.ini). If you don’t have Tor, search for “vidalia” in google.

Note that on my computer, I put php in Windows PATH and then I can use php as a command line, it’s way faster.

And if you don’t know what to do with the pics, use them to send to people you’re chatting with, as described in the post Be a whore.

Download the get pictures script here

Have fun,
Alan

Make money with a newsletter - private section open

Filed under: General, Money, Tools and scripts — Alan @ 12:54 pm

Hi everybody,

I have opened the private section for the project “Make money by creating your newsletter“.

Subscription is FREE, but LIMITED.

In the private section, I am sharing more powerful tricks to increase the effectiveness (and reduce the effort) of the project. You can guess that I can’t release the tricks openly, otherwise they would get spoiled, and would become useless.

If you want to be part of the private section, hurry-up, send an email to nlproject@ideasbeta.com

Note: Sorry, enough people have already answered and the subscription is closed.

Also, I am about to share some of my private ressource on another private section, stay tuned! It will be some powerful suff I use for one of my main sources of income : The 40,000 pageviews a day goal. I reached this goal since a while, and now, the infos/scripts and tools I used are mature enough to be shared with a few people who are really motivated to make it this year.

Want to start making money today?

Filed under: General, Money, Tools and scripts — Alan @ 5:16 pm

I updated my Free Pad Submitter, cleaned faulty websites and added a couple of new ones.

The main change is  that it is now multi-threaded, and thus goes as fast as your internet connection is!

I am sorry I didn’t release the full version yet, I am quite busy but I am going to put some work this month to be able to release the v1.0

Anyway, you can download it now.

Also I am still working on this new project which can be done by anybody, I feel like giving you the details already, especially because I know that during the christmas period, people have  some free time, so that would be perfect to start working and make some money. However I would like to experiment further to give you really good tips. Don’t hesitate to shout and leave a comment, say what you prefer… have the project details already, with still a few parts to tweak, or wait another month and get the full report?

Track your screensavers (or any shareware of yours) installs

Filed under: Tools and scripts — Alan @ 9:37 pm

Ok guys, as I have received several request to ask how I could track efficiently my screensavers installs, I am going to share my script.

I immediately wrote that script because when it comes to the web, it is essential to track your projects, for 2 reasons:

1) It is always encouraging to see that people are actually using the stuff you make, so it is a good motivation to go on.

2) When you do something, you must measure if that works or not. If it works, do it more, if it doesn’t do something else.

Most of the time you will read blogs of “internet gurus”, they talk about their projects which are so successful, with thousands of subscribers, thousands of $$$, and you think “I wish I was bright like them and know what I need to do to be successful on the web”.

The truth is : They didn’t know more than you do when they started, and even now when they start a project, they usually don’t know how successful it is going to be. The trick is : they just try! And then they track how their project is going, and if it is good, they can brag about it! But be certain that for one success, we all have 10 failures. The good thing is that on the internet, you can fail and it is not the end of the world. Just try something else. (This rule applies to real life too, by the way)

Anyway, enough said, you can download the script here to Track your screensavers installs.

Please note that it can be used for any software that you would write !

It is not rocket-science, the principle is the following:

Once you have your software/screensaver ready, you must create an installer. There are many softwares to do that : InnoSetup, Nsis, etc.

You can make your installer execute a windows command at the end of the setup (if your installer maker doesn;t support it, throw it away and use another one).

The command you want to execute is

explorer “http://www.yoursite.com/ads.php?scr=You_screensaver_name&hc=y”

This command will open an internet page to an advertising/Thank you/readme page.

This ad page simply tracks what software you just installed.

I included another page that will calculate several stats about your installations.

You need PHP/MySql to put the pages on your server.

Just read the instructions in the zip file and have fun with it!

Side note: This script is very useful when you bundle a pay-per-install program such as Zango or Rasermedia, because you can compare the stats they will give you and how many screensavers you know have really been installed.

Free Pad Submitter

Filed under: Tools and scripts — Alan @ 5:02 pm

[April 2008 - THIS PROJECT IS CURRENTLY ON HOLD - I can’t guarantee that it works 100%]

I have currently no time  to update this project. It is possible to improve this tool to support many more websites butI have absolutely no time to take care of it.

I can’t unveil it in public, but there are some huge perspectives to make this tool a MUST-HAVE for shareware developers and create a community around it. If anyone is willing to take care of it, I’m willing to give away any money generated from advertising around such community (remember this tool is meant to stay free of charge, but any other monetization opportunity is considered). No programming skill is required, but 1) some free time once to write propre documentation 2) some free time to take care of the community.

If someone wants to assume this role, please contact me : contact [at] ideasbeta.com

(note: I’m writing those lines above for a future call, currently I don’t have any time to spend on this, don’t contact me yet, but there are some big opportunities around this tool in a close future).

———————————–

Pad submitter is a free tool that will AUTOMATICALLY submit your pad file to 50 software repositories.
Current version is 0.4 beta (which means that it is still in improvement, please subscribe to the RSS feed from this website to stay informed about updates).

What it does:

- Submit your Pad file to more than 50 websites. Please see Websites list.
- You can make a batch submission of several pad files.
- The program is multi threaded, thus it goes as fast as your internet connexion is, and doesn’t stall on faulty websites.
- Totally free.
- Run on windows, but is written in Java. If you need it on other OS, please contact me.

>>>> Click here to download Free Pad Submitter. <<<<

Click here to see the list of last changes.

More explanations:
When you create a software, you can get it promoted through software repositories.
You need to create a PAD file, which is a file that contains information about your software.
To generate a pad file, please use the free Pad Generator software PadGen.
Once you have your Pad file, you must upload it to your website.

Execute then Pad Submitter, and give the URL of your pad file.
You’ll get your software immediatly promoted (to 150 websites will be available on v1.0, will still be for free).
This way you’ll get also many links to your website from valuable places. The software repositories that I chose are considered as trusted websites, and have a PR 4,5 or 6.
It will increase your ranking in the search engines.

Why 150 websites when other softwares can submit up to 1000 ?
For 2 reasons:
1 - From experience, when submitting your software, having it on 150 well chosen websites is enough. Above 150 websites, the promotion doesn’t increase significantly anymore.
2 - I wrote this software because I was unhappy with other submission softwares (I paid more than $300 to buy 3 different softwares). Try the trial versions to understand what I am talking about. You can spend $100 on a software that will submit to 1000 websites. then only 60-70% will succeed. Wait 6 months, start tracking the results, you will see that actually maybe 10% of the websites are sending you traffic! So why pay $100 to get the same result as my free software?

Why only 50 now?
Because it is in beta, I count on you to test it and report problems to me, when I will find it is stable enough I will release the 150-website version.
